The art of virtual consulting

Not long after our final intensive was relocated from China to South Africa, COVID-19 spread so rapidly that our consulting engagement shifted again. This time, we recognized that the project would need to take place virtually. Both students and our clients had to shift schedules, expectations and mindsets as we worked together to create an unprecedented, once-in-a-lifetime experience…literally! Kids, pets and snacks were regulars at our meetings.

Ubuntu in the digital world

The South African Ubuntu philosophy can be roughly understood as “I am because we are.” Desmond Tutu states that “you can’t be human all by yourself…We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole World.” In this intensive, we manifest Ubuntu virtually as we care for others and act generously, even at a distance.

Building Connections, Virtually

For our final consulting engagement, our group worked with a South African joint venture, to understand their organizational capacity and effectiveness. Through in-depth interviews and co-creation, we were able to help the team understand where to bring efficiency and how to bring the business forward into the future.

A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination.

A Few Meta-Lessons on The Complexity and

Emergence of the Human Experience

By Gary

We can never see the whole, so moving forward often takes a leap of faith. So, keep your faith!

We construct the world through our own lens, which filters what we see and shapes where we are willing to go. So, know your Point of View!

As soon as we act to include, we automatically exclude. The challenge is how to remain open to what we may not be seeing and feel confident to go forward. So, remain open!

All relationships emerge from an invitation extended. So, welcome others!

A model can be right, or a plan can be good, but due to the complexity of a given circumstance they may be irrelevant. Being present with others is often more meaningful than being right. So, choose to co-create what’s meaningful!

Every act of measurement and assessment is preceded by a choice about what we choose to observe. So, make choices wisely!

The future is not a place preordained, but one we co-create together!
